The present study aims at analyzing the educational dimensions of Ashura incident to explore that great event from the viewpoint of autonomy. To do so, the authors use a descriptive-analytical method to analyze the behaviors of those playing roles in Ashura incident, based on autonomy principle. The findings of the study may be divided into two sections. The first section deals with the concept of autonomy and its three criteria. The findings of the second section are related to the analysis of Imam Hussein’s way of life and that of his companions on the basis of the three criteria of autonomy (originality, rationality and willpower). These findings suggest that Imam Hussein’s action and that of his companions were prominent instances of autonomy originated from the teachings of the Quran. Imam’s approach in giving freedom and nurturing rationality is also an instance of preparing the ground for realization of autonomy. The related findings with an analysis of the enemies’ behaviors show that the lack of the three criteria of autonomy is evident in the performance of the ordinary people and the elite.
Accordingly, the enemies of imam are the prominent examples of non-autonomous men. Fear and lack of insight and knowledge among people and scaring them, as well as poisonous propaganda and the rulers’ egoism are also among the things preparing the ground for non-autonomy.
