The issue of student identity is a key challenge for educational systems in contemporary multicultural societies. In Iran, cultural policy-making in education is predominantly based on a uniform and ideological representation of official identity. Meanwhile, today’s adolescents live in diverse ethnic, linguistic, religious, and media environments, and possess a wide range of lived experiences. This gap between institutional identity and lived identity has led to generational alienation and reduced the effectiveness of the educational system. In such a context, the need for theoretical reconsideration of identity policies in schools—particularly through the lenses of power, culture, and education—becomes increasingly evident.
This study adopts a qualitative, theoretical, and comparative-analytical approach, using inference-based analysis to examine and compare the views of ten prominent cultural and critical theorists—namely Gramsci, Adorno, Althusser, Foucault, Bourdieu, Habermas, Stuart Hall, Taylor, Bauman, and Turner—with the aim of extracting their policy implications for reforming identity policy-making in Iran’s educational system. The unit of analysis is the theories themselves and their core concepts related to identity and education.
Findings indicate that current school identity policies in Iran focus largely on reinforcing official cultural order and monologue, thereby limiting cultural dialogue, acceptance of difference, and adolescent subjectivity. The extracted theoretical implications emphasize the need for participatory policy-making, promotion of cultural dialogue, acceptance of identity diversity, revision of curricular discourse, and redefinition of schools as arenas for the pluralistic representation of identity.
